Respite Services


Respite services are provided either in the home or in DBIS’ residential setting in the London area.  Respite Services are intended for individuals who require short-term respite to provide the care partner some time away from their caregiving duties; for clients who are in crisis or for those who live alone and require support while recovering from an illness or medical procedure and whose needs can be met in the program.

Respite Criteria – Residential:

  • Caregiver and/or individual with brain injury requires respite
  • Requires full day or overnight respite
  • Safe without direct supervision for at least 30 minutes at a time
  • Ability and willingness to have a roommate
  • Have a confirmed discharge location
  • Needs can be met in an environment in which staffing resources are shared with other individuals
  • Medically stable for the duration of the respite visit
  • Accessible unit may be available. Depending upon available resources may need to transfer and complete ADLs independently.
  • Requires high levels of one-to-one support
  • Minimum 18 years of age, no upper age limit

Respite Criteria – In Home:

  • Caregiver and/or individual with brain injury requires respite
  • Needs can be met with one staff
  • Medically stable for the duration of the respite visit
  • Minimum 18 years of age, no upper age limit

Exclusion Criteria:

  • High level of risk of harm to others

Discharge Criteria:

  • Repeated breach of service conditions as outlined in the Service Agreement
  • Significant change in medical condition that prevents DBIS’ ability to effectively deliver services
  • Change in functional status where higher levels of support are required, exceeding available program staffing resources
